Are Open Days Really Worth It?
At The Downs Preparatory School, we often hear the question: Are open days really worth it? As a parent myself, I know all too well how busy our schedules can be, and deciding how to spend your weekends is no small task. But, when it comes to selecting the right school for your child, nothing compares to an open day.

This September, as parents made their way down the drive, they were greeted not only by our stunning 60 acres of grounds but by the welcoming atmosphere that defines our school. Some may think an open day is a tick-box activity, but I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to feel the pulse of a school in a way that no brochure or website can fully convey.
Here at The Downs, we take pride in creating a community where every child is nurtured and supported. On our most recent open days, families had the opportunity to explore our classrooms, meet our dedicated staff, and witness first-hand the enthusiasm that both teachers and students bring to their daily activities. They saw our school in action, spoke with students about their experiences, and enjoyed the breathtaking surroundings that make The Downs so unique.
One of the key benefits of attending an open day is that it gives parents a true sense of the school’s culture and values. We focus on creating an environment where children can fully engage with their learning and surroundings. This was a point that resonated with many parents during their visit, as they could observe the ways in which our curriculum prepares students for the future while holding firm to traditional values.
Parents who took the time to come down the drive last weekend left with a deeper understanding of what makes our school special. Yes they saw classrooms, but they also saw children thriving, teachers who are passionate, and a school that truly feels like a second home.
So, are open days worth it? We believe they’re invaluable.
