"Fit, Not Fame” - Preparing for the Move to Senior School
Last night, we welcomed headteachers from three outstanding senior schools - King’s College Taunton, Clifton College, and Badminton School - to The Downs for an evening of discussion and insight into the journey from preparatory to senior education.
Our Year 5-8 parents joined us for this valuable event, gaining advice and reassurance about what can often feel like a daunting next step. Each of our visiting headteachers spoke not only from their professional experience but also as parents themselves, offering a thoughtful and personal perspective on helping children find the right next step.
A clear and consistent message emerged throughout the evening: when it comes to choosing a senior school, it’s all about “fit, not fame.” Finding the environment where your child will truly flourish - academically, socially, and emotionally - matters far more than a school’s name or reputation.
We were also privileged to hear from Ian Ryder, parent to five former Downs pupils, who reflected on his family’s own journey. Remarkably, four of his five children went on to a different senior school, carefully chosen to suit their individual strengths, interests, and personalities. Ian spoke passionately about the value of a full preparatory education up to Year 8, describing how those extra years in a smaller, nurturing environment gave his children the grounding to flourish in their senior settings.
A particularly heart-warming moment came from Dr Greene, Head of Clifton College, who remarked, “You can spot a Downs pupil from a mile off.” He, as well as Mrs Miles and Mr Sloan, praised our pupils for being “so far ahead socially and academically” when they join senior school in Year 9 - a wonderful reflection of the well-rounded, confident young people our community helps to shape.
The evening also highlighted the importance of meeting with headteachers from prospective schools early in the process. Our guests encouraged parents to visit, ask questions, and get a genuine feel for each school’s ethos and community. Most senior schools operate an open-door policy, and parents were urged to make the most of it - attending open days to see the school in action but also arranging to visit again privately to gain a true sense of the environment and how it might suit their child. These personal conversations often reveal far more than any prospectus or league table ever could.
At The Downs, we take great care to guide families through this decision-making process, offering individual advice and opportunities to connect with a wide range of senior schools. For more detailed guidance and practical information, please see our Senior School Transition Guide.
A huge thank you to our visiting headteachers and to all our parents who joined us for this thoughtful, inspiring evening of discussion.
