Thriving in Headship at IAPS 2024

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the IAPS Annual Conference, which took place over three engaging days at the Celtic Manor Resort. Set in the rolling hills of Wales, this venue was the perfect backdrop for headteachers from all over the country to come together and discuss the future of independent education. It was both inspiring and energising to connect with so many passionate leaders, each of whom brought their own unique perspectives on nurturing school communities and adapting to modern educational challenges.

One of the standout moments for me was Dr. Rangan Chatterjee's seminar, "Not Just Surviving, But Thriving in Headship." His focus on well-being, balance, and fostering a thriving school environment truly resonated with me. It was a refreshing reminder that leading a school is about far more than day-to-day operations—it's about creating a community where both staff and students can flourish.

Not just surviving, but thriving in headship

As I reflect on my time at The Downs, I feel more committed than ever to building a culture where children are encouraged to explore, express, and excel. We place great emphasis on developing 21st-century skills while holding fast to our core traditional values. This is especially crucial in an age where technology can often detract from the essential human connections we need to thrive. As a smartphone-free school, we create space for students to develop meaningful relationships, focus on their learning, and engage in their surroundings without distraction.

Incorporating Dr. Chatterjee's principles of well-being into our leadership and curriculum will help ensure that our school community not only survives but thrives—both today and in the future. I look forward to working with our staff, students, and parents to continue cultivating an environment where everyone can reach their best potential.
