Music is a powerful way for children to express themselves. Playing or singing alongside others lifts the heart up high and with it, the spirit of those who hear it resounding through our corridors.
Academic music lessons
Modern facilities coupled with plentiful opportunities mean that music is a central part of life at The Downs for children of all ages. Weekly lessons (from Reception to Year 8) are a chance to perform, listen or even compose in different musical genres.
Practice makes perfect
As much as we enjoy hearing music, there’s also a need to contain it so that practice and lessons can happen side-by-side. We do just that with a large music room, three sound proof music pods as well as five bespoke practice rooms in our Coachman’s Cottage.
From pods to performance
Once ready for the stage, our theatre or more intimate Charlton Room are perfect venues to welcome family and friends. Termly concerts and recitals are joyful events and great preparation for children heading towards music exams. Our Music Festival – in collaboration with Badminton School – is another chance to excel and grow. External adjudicators offer constructive advice to help improve children’s performance skills.
Music is an important part of school life. Our community is enriched by the singing and music that can be heard through our corridors.
We love to see children exploring musical talent (beyond their class music lessons and year-group choir) by signing up with one of our exceptional visiting musicians to learn an instrument or take singing lessons.
We generally recommend that children don’t begin music tuition until Year 1, when they’re fully settled into the routine of school life.
Individual music tuition
Whether your child dreams of joining a rock band or becoming the next Charlotte Church we have exceptional musicians ready to propel their talent to the next level. Our tutors teach individual or joint lessons in a huge variety of instruments.
